Can TVS diodes and ESD diodes be interchanged? Unikeyic, come and educate!

Many people have always been confused about the difference between TVS DIODES and ESD diodes, and even confuse the two. However, in most cases, the two cannot be confused. In order to provide users with more reference when purchasing diodes in bulk, the following is an introduction to two types of diodes onunikeyic electronics.

Different packaging for easy identification

When purchasing TVS diodes and ESD diodes, it is important to understand that there are many differences between the two in practical applications, with the most obvious being their different packaging. When we receive a diode, if we see that it has two pins, it is a TVS diode. Commonly used packages include DO-218AB, SMA/DO-214AC, SMB/DO-214AA, SMC/DO-214AB. In contrast, esd diodes often have more than two pins, and common packages are also different, such as SOT-23, SOD-523, DFN0603, etc. are all esd diodes.

The power range and conduction voltage are different

When it comes to the difference between TVS and ESD diodes, it also depends on the power range and conduction voltage. The power mode of TVS diode is larger and has a wide range, ranging from 200W to 6000W, while in contrast, the power of ESD diode is smaller, mainly concentrated in the range of 50W to 500W. Another unique feature of ESD diodes is that their positive and negative conduction voltages are vdd and - vdd, which are also differences between the two types of diodes.

Actual application performance varies

For TVS diodes and ESD diodes, the two types of diodes perform differently in the circuit. TVS diodes are commonly used as surge suppressors at the input end and voltage protectors at the output end because they are stable enough to withstand sudden situations such as lightning strikes. On the other hand, ESD diodes are mainly used in input-output interfaces and electrostatic sensitive circuits, targeting charged objects such as human static electricity and air discharge, which are weak currents.

In summary, the difference between TVS diodes and ESD diodes is that once we have a clear understanding of these, we can more accurately choose the diode that suits us. In addition, TVS diodes and ESD diodes can be interchanged when there is no protection requirement for the diode at medium power. Details can be found on Unikeyic.
