About Luminary Micro
Luminary Micro, founded in 2004, was a pioneering company in the field of microcontroller units (MCUs) based on the ARM Cortex-M3 processor. The company was headquartered in Austin, Texas, USA, and quickly made a significant impact in the semiconductor industry by being one of the first to license the ARM Cortex-M3 core, aiming to make it accessible for a wide range of applications.
Luminary Micro's mission was to bring the benefits of ARM's powerful architecture to the broadest range of embedded applications. They achieved this by offering a series of highly integrated, cost-effective microcontrollers that catered to the needs of designers in areas such as industrial control, automotive, medical devices, and consumer electronics. Their products were known for their ease of use, robust performance, and affordability, which democratized access to high-performance microcontroller technology.
The company's flagship product line, Stellaris®, was introduced as the world's first silicon implementation of the ARM Cortex-M3 processor. The Stellaris® family of microcontrollers was designed to offer high integration with features like integrated Ethernet MAC+PHY, USB OTG (On-The-Go), CAN, and a host of other connectivity solutions which were critical for the emerging IoT (Internet of Things) applications. This level of integration helped developers reduce system costs and complexity, speeding up the time-to-market for their products.
Luminary Micro also provided a comprehensive suite of software and tools to support the development process. This included the StellarisWare® software, which was a complete package of peripheral driver libraries, real-time operating system (RTOS) components, and example source code to help developers fully exploit the capabilities of the microcontroller.
In May 2009, Luminary Micro was acquired by Texas Instruments (TI), a global semiconductor company. This acquisition was part of TI's strategic move to expand its portfolio in the microcontroller market and to strengthen its position in providing comprehensive embedded solutions. Post-acquisition, the Stellaris® line of microcontrollers was integrated into TI’s broader MCU product portfolio, and Luminary Micro’s innovations continued to flourish under the TI brand.
The legacy of Luminary Micro lives on through TI's continued innovation in MCU technology, with ongoing advancements that build on the strong foundation laid by Luminary Micro. The integration of Luminary Micro’s products into TI’s portfolio has allowed for continued growth in performance, efficiency, and functionality in MCU products, supporting a wider array of applications and maintaining the vision of making sophisticated microcontroller technology accessible to a broad audience.
